MAVS VOLLEYBALL DEFEAT GREENVILLE IN STRAIGHT SETS 25-11 26-24 25-23
On Thursday, the Lady Mavs volleyball team played their second match of the season against the Greenville High Red Raiders. Just like Tuesday night, the Mavs got off to a quick start! With the match just a few minutes old, the Greenville coach needed to call her first timeout to try and settle down her team as the Lady Mavs had stormed to a 10-2 lead. The timeout was not successful and with Senior Co-Captains Heather Granger (6 kills) and Dana Landers (12 digs) pacing the way, the Mavs cruised to a game one victory 25-11.
In game 2, the Red Raiders finally showed up. A scrappy defensive bunch from the heart of the city, made the going to tough for the Lady Mavs. The Mavs found themselves down midway through the game and had to burn a timeout of their own. Coach P made a defensive substitution with Junior Sammi Hauser making a couple of nice digs and with Granger and Junior Outside Hitter Katie Faith combining for 10 kills in the game, the Mavs overcame a late 4 point deficit (18-22) to claw back and gain a 26-24 victory.
Game 3, would be very similar to game 2. The Red Raiders held tough and again took a lead late into the game. But again, the Lady Mavs would fight hard on this night and overcome another late deficit to win 25-23. Junior Setter Kayla Whitten, who had 27 assists on the night, fed her big hitting, red headed outside hitter Granger late in the game to complete the comeback. Granger finished the night with a total of 22 kills!
The Lady Mavs will try and continue the win streak with their first region match, in the toughest region in the state (2AAAA), when Boiling Springs makes its way to MHS from Spartanburg County on Tuesday. Game time is 6:30. Go Mavs!

MAVS WIN FIRST MATCH AGAINST WADE HAMPTON, 25-13, 25-16, 15-25, 25-15
The Lady Mavs opened the 2010 regular season campaign on Tuesday night against the Wade Hampton Lady Generals in the MHS Gymanasium and it didn't take long for the Mavs to hit their stride. Fueled by an early service run by Junior Katie Faith, the Mavs quickly jumped to a 10-2 lead forcing the Generals coach to burn his first time out. But the time out was not going to slow down the Mavs in game 1. With Senior Co-Captain Heather Granger booming kills down the line and across the court as well as serving up a couple of aces, the Mavs easily rolled in Game 1 25-13.
In game 2, the Generals were able to hang tough for the first portion of the game, with the teams essentially trading points up to an 8-8 tie. But then the three headed attack of Granger, Sophomore Middle Hitter Kentra Washington and Junior Middle Hitter Laura Woodlee took over. After a couple of kills by each of these players during the run, the Mavs had raced to a 19-12 lead. From there the Mavs comfortably put away the Generals 25-16 with the closing point a kill by Faith.
In game 3, things started out the same way, with the Mavs jumping to a 10-6 lead and it looked like the sweep was on. But the Generals took command and the Mavs play went sloppy. Despite 7 kills by Granger in the game, the Generals closed the game with a 19-5 run to extend the match to a 4th game.
But in game 4, the Mavs picked the pace back up jumping to a quick 13-2 lead thanks to 4 Woodlee kills and 2 aces. After trading points throughout the middle portion of the game, Washington and Woodlee put the finishing touches on the game and the match with kills for points 22 and 24 and a Wade Hampton service error on match point gave the Mavs the victory 25-15.
Next up for the Lady Mavs is a match with Greenville High at MHS Thursday night at 6:30. Go Mavs!
